The pictures on the left, taken a few days ago, are of the toxic spill fouling the Animas River in southern Colorado. The picture on the right is the cover of Summitville, a novel I wrote 15 years ago. This thriller tells the story of a cyanide heap-leach gold mine in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado. The story relates the on-going, long-term environmental damage caused by a greedy mine operator, his Wall Street backers, and inept bureaucrats. The mine operator takes the profits. The inhabitants of the ruined watershed are left holding the bag. Sound familiar?
